If what you are interested in is the returned XML of the search results, you can get it by just leaving off the proxystylesheet key=value pair:
http://search.nd.edu/search?client=default_frontend&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=default_frontend&site=default_collection&q=testing&x=0&y=0
vs.
http://search.nd.edu/search?client=default_frontend&output=xml_no_dtd&site=default_collection&q=testing&x=0&y=0
