UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA ROD LIBRARY DEPARTMENT HEAD POSITION; OPEN NOW HEAD, LIBRARY TECHNOLOGIES & SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT Rod Library, University of Northern Iowa, seeks a dedicated, experienced, and creative librarian to lead the Library Technologies and Systems Department. This department has a history of innovation and strong service orientation in a library noted for its service commitment and outstanding library faculty and staff. The immediate, past incumbent of this position has accepted a position as an assistant director. The Head of Library Technologies and Systems will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing computer-based library technologies, networks, and systems for Rod Library and assisting the Cedar Valley Library Consortium on technology/systems matters. In addition to the head, Library Technologies and Systems consists of one systems librarian, 2 1/3 FTE clerical and support staff and six (2.3 FTE) student assistants. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the Head will establish directions for development and application of library technologies, set departmental priorities, plan, recommend, and oversee budgets in support of technologies and systems development and maintenance. Current systems/technologies include Innovative Interfaces IOLS; OCLC; CD-ROM network; staff and public microcomputers running Windows 95; Novell Netware and NT servers; Internet and Iowa Communications Network connections through the campus backbone. The Head will also serve as principal liaison with UNI's Information Technology Services, other university persons and bodies responsible for technologies and systems, and various library system vendors. Minimum salary $50,000. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. At least three years post-MLS professional library experience. At least two years professional library experience with principal responsibilities in systems and technologies. Demonstrated competencies in managing integrated library systems, electronic information resources, microcomputer hardware and software, multiple operating systems, CD-ROM technology, networked environment, Internet resources. Administrative experience in systems/computer/networking positions, including successful leadership in planning, setting priorities for, and implementing major projects. Demonstrated supervisory, organizational, analytical/problem solving skills, service orientation, and written and oral communications skills. Thorough knowledge of basic principles of library operations, processes, and trends. Ability to communicate technical information to those less familiar with technology. Ability to work effectively with library faculty and staff and university computer services personnel is essential. Preferred: Experience/expertise with: Novell NetWare; Windows NT Server; Windows 95; Windows NT Workstation; HTML; a campus-wide network environment; a networked CD-ROM environment. Second earned master's degree or doctorate. This position holds faculty rank commensurate with credentials and experience. Position is a full-time, 12 month, tenure-track administrative position. The position is open now. The position requires the completion of a second Master's degree or doctorate by the sixth year of employment. Budgeting sources for library technologies & systems have included regular library funding as well as awards from non-recurring funds from student computer fees; budgeting sources for access services include the Library's auxiliary services budget. The Library has just added its own T1 line for Internet access. The Library has employed an Innovative Interfaces IOLS since 1989. Since 1996, the Rod Library has been a member of the technology-based Cedar Valley Library Consortium, sharing its Innovative system with consortium members (at present, Cedar Falls Public Library and Hawkeye Community College).
