Hi Anne,

We allow the use of smartcode bar codes and have had no problems at all.
There was a Library Journal article about it a few months ago that might
put some of your worries to rest:
http://www.libraryjournal.com/lj/mobilemhome/889495-422/library_cards_on
_smartphones_the.html.csp.

To me, the convenience of it far outweighs the possibility that
something might happen.

Subject: [Publib] barcodes scanned on phones

Hi All,

Our library is considering allowing patrons to use barcodes
scanned onto their smart phones to check out books. If you currently
allow this, please let me know how it works for your library. If you
have tried it and changed your mind, we would like to know what your
problems were.

Our library serves a small, highly educated town of about
12,000 people. We have only had a few instances of patrons trying this
method of checking out items, but we feel that there may be some privacy
or other misuse issues lurking. We have never been a library which
requires a patron to have their library card when they check out, so
this is not a matter of convenience. (For the record, we have no
self-check machines yet.)

Thanks, in advance, for whatever help you can provide.

I will be happy to summarize for the list.
