[Publib] usb flash drive problems

I may have already asked this, but here goes again. ( I have been trying to
find the answer for a while). Some students have been having trouble getting
the library computers to open their flash drive. The ones I have seen have
been a black HP flash drive. That is all I remember about them. The drives
will work in other computers on campus and at their home. Sometimes they
will work if we just switch computers, either one of the same model right
beside the offending computer or failing that one of the new ones I
installed in January.

I tried one of the Microsoft fixits, but it crashed the Cornerstone that
reboots the computer fresh. When the drive is first plugged into the
computer, it will go through the motions of loading it, including very
quickly flashing the contents on the screen. This will then vanish and all
attempts to get the drive to open results in the message "Drive E not
available, please insert disk".

Anyone else encountered this? (And not the evil computer gremlin following
me?).
