ALA calls on Dept. of Education to highlight school librarians as states
prepare to Race to the Top
<http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=3567> August 31st, 2009 |
Category: School Libraries <http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?cat=11>
http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=3567
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Jenni Terry <jterry at alawash.org>
WASHINGTON, D.C. The American Library Association (ALA) recently filed
comments to the Department of Education regarding the Race to the Top Fund,
a competitive one-time grant program funded through the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that aims to encourage and reward states that
are leading education innovation and reform.
The ALAs
comments<http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/A
LA-Race-to-the-Top-Comments.pdf>highlighted
the need for the Secretary of Education to strongly acknowledge
the important role that school libraries play in a students education and
to encourage states submitting proposals for Race to Top Funds to include
resources for school libraries. The comments also called for an increase to
the number of school libraries served by a state-licensed school librarian.
State statistics consistently show that schools with a school library
staffed by a state-licensed school librarian produce better test scores.
More importantly, these schools produced well-rounded students that are
prepared to function in a global society, American Association of School
Librarians (AASL) President Cassandra Barnett said.
A school library staffed by a state-licensed school librarian adds another
classroom to the school and another teacher to help boost achievement
scores, help struggling readers, and teach the 21st-century skills that are
so critical to a students education.

I like the Kansas City and Mrs. Calabash suggestions!
You could also do a raspy "Get out!" a la the Amityville Horror movie.
Or do a "station sign-off announcement" and then broadcast the national
anthem, followed by white noise.
Or you could sing "Happy Trails" (Roy Rogers & Dale Evans)
or "I'll Be Seeing You" (Bob Hope)
or "Carol's Theme" [I'm so glad we had this time together....] (Carol
Burnett)
or you could couch your announcement in Storybook style, beginning with
"Once upon a time...." and ending in ".... and they lived happily ever
after. The end."
Congrats on your retirement, Joe!

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge
extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines.
Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos.
They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of
human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of
anyone who says otherwise. ---- Erica Olsen, Librarian Avengers blog

I am looking at proposals from two companies, Amerikit and Userful, for
solutions for public access computers for our Youth computer room.

I'd like to hear from you if you have any first-hand knowledge about
either of these, or if you have another vendor you would recommend (or not).

We've run out of space and are looking ... medium to long term ... at
either expansion on site or the purchase of property. On site
expansion likely means less than optimally sized service areas and
hence higher operating costs. New property and building means higher
construction costs since we'd have to rebuild what we already have.
The question becomes: what's wiser to do?
I'd appreciate contacts and testimonials for library space
planning/construction consultants who understand public library needs.
They do not have to be from the Chicago area or the midwest.
Thanks!

Hi all,Hope you are having a wonderful Monday! I am looking for feedback
from libraries that have circulation desks on multiple floors.
How do handle the paying of fines? Do you have two cash registers or just
put the money in the main register at the end of the night?
As always, thanks in advance for any help!

We used a pet gate (you could use a baby gate as well, but I think the pet
gates look a little more "mature") in our old library for this purpose and
it worked very well. You can hang a sign from it or spray paint it a fun
color...here's a link to one I found online. You can buy them for under
$100.

We have recently relocated (temporarily) and need a way to cover open
doorways to slightly cut them off from the public... we priced swinging
doors but they are too expensive for as many as we need. Complete doors are
out of the questions because the staff in those areas would have no
airflow.... we are hoping to find some sort of shower curtain type product
with kid or library designs.... anyone have any idea where we can find
something of this sort?

I never recommend adding ARCs to your library collection. This material
is not final in any way and the final product may be completely
different from what you are holding in your hand. At the least, the
editing, spelling and grammar are suspect; not to mention the author
will receive no recompense for their intellectual property. Please do
not do this.

The opinions are my own; the library wouldn't want 'em!

Bead curtains, baby -- they'd be so far out!
If you want a library theme, then how about threading monofil through
discarded book covers/jackets? You'd only need 1-2 strands to alternate
with the beads... 8-)>

Thanks,

thanks for Victoria's response here. I recently received a request about
ARCs and commented that there are several threads on this list (though that
certainly doesn't mean we can't revisit such a good topic!).
I would be particularly interested in hearing from publishers and other book
industry people on this list who can comment on the legal issues around
using ARCs.

The library I worked at previously had a circulation desk on each of two
floors, and each had its own register. (We also had a drive-up for
picking up holds, but didn't take payments there.)

We use an online form as well as a print form. Our CMS-driven website is a

Cataloging Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)In a word, DON'T.In addition to
copyright issues created by adding these materials to your collectioon,
ther are physical reasons why making ARCs a part of your collection can
cause problems.
1.. ARCs are simply bound galleys. They are not up to the use they will
get in a library.
2.. ARCs don't usually include illustrations, indicies, or bibliography
that would be found in the printed non-fiction book. If a reviewer notes
that s/he has not seen illustrations, it's because s/he is reviewing from an
ARC.
3.. The composition of an ARC may be totally changed 'twixt galley and
published copy. There may also be spelling and grammar errors as well as
typos that the copy editor missed.
I'm the audio-visual librarian. A couple of years ago a member of the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tried to give us DVDs of some
nominees. We couldn't !them; the DVDs were a digital equivalent of ARCs.

I have some questions for those of you using an on-line ILL request. Do
patrons submit many "illegal" requests ( i.e. requests for items you own but
are currently all checked out, items that are not eligible for ILL, such as
current year publication dates, etc.)?

Our audio-visual desk is on the third floor. If people have fines for late
AV materials, they can pay them at the AV desk. If there are major
problems, such as an account with high fines, we send them downstairs to
check with our registration desk.

Bob,
In looking for the contact information for library planning consultant,
Anders Dahlgren, I found this information in the PubLib Archives. It's from
2002, but at least it's a start:
http://lists.webjunction.org/wjlists/publib/2002-June/040993.html
Hope that helps!

We've run out of space and are looking ... medium to long term ... at either
expansion on site or the purchase of property. On site expansion likely
means less than optimally sized service areas and hence higher operating
costs. New property and building means higher construction costs since we'd
have to rebuild what we already have.
The question becomes: what's wiser to do?
I'd appreciate contacts and testimonials for library space
planning/construction consultants who understand public library needs.
They do not have to be from the Chicago area or the midwest.
Thanks!

Have any of you noticed a decline in the number of Pre-pubs you're
receiving? We used to get a box of about 15-20 titles every month (we
circulate roughly 10,000 items a month). However, our most recent delivery
was only about 8 titles. I use these copies as a buying tool and often buy a
large percentage of the titles for our collection.
Has anyone else noticed this? Are publishers cutting back? Is it a
reflection of our frozen budget and the reduction in book buying we suffered
through last fiscal year? Any thoughts?

Occasional small skirmishes are arising at our ref desk. We subscribe
to Value Line. Just when we thought (almost) everyone who used it had
died, suddenly we have at least ten people who use it and want it to
stay forever. Meanwhile, a couple of patrons are lobbying for
Investor's Business Daily, and have no use for Value Line--literally
or figuratively. One woman said, jokingly, that if we didn't get a
subscription to IBD, she would quit paying her property taxes.
Presumably to punish us. Ha, ha. Both Value Line and IBD are
expensive, and these are hard times. Oh--and one of the Value Line
devotees said the IBD was so much like the Wall Street Journal--which
we get--that we shouldn't bother ordering IBD.
There are no magic answers out there, but...does anyone who gets IBD
and/or Value Line and/or the WSJ and/or Whatever have thoughtful,
well-reasoned arguments for why we ought to subscribe to IBD? I
mean...even after having looked at it online, a bit...I wonder if IBD
*is* as wondrous as the people who want it say it is? Is it really
enough like the WSJ that we can say, with conviction, and not as
dysfunctional, people-pleasing librarians, that we are very sorry
BUT--we subscribe to the WSJ, we're watching our budget, and would you
kindly be happy with what we provide, thank you ever so much?
We serve a mostly blue-collar-to-rural population on the edge of
Peoria (itself a city of blue-collar heritage), and we don't seem to
have huge numbers of people with a) money, and b) investments. So I
want to use resources wisely.
Thank you.

The whole purpose of vendors sending us ARC's is so that we can review them
and then purchase copies for the library. If we would just add the
uncorrected proofs we receive that would defeat the publishers purpose...or
at least that's what I always thought!

thanks for Victoria's response here. I recently received a request about
ARCs and commented that there are several threads on this list (though that
certainly doesn't mean we can't revisit such a good topic!).
I would be particularly interested in hearing from publishers and other book
industry people on this list who can comment on the legal issues around
using ARCs.

I never recommend adding ARCs to your library collection. This
material is not final in any way and the final product may be completely

spelling and grammar are suspect; not to mention the author will receive no
recompense for their intellectual property. Please do not do this.

The opinions are my own; the library wouldn't want 'em!

Do you or should you catalog ARC (advanced reader copy) into your
library collection and circulate the items?
Please reply with responses on policies on the cataloging or
prohibition of cataloging of advanced reader copy into an ILS.
Thank you for your help with this.
