[Publib] RE: Discontinuing Fax Service

We're now moving away from in-house library fax service at the circ desk  to
a self-service vending fax machine that will be located in our new "career
center". Not only is it more cost effective, it's also much less time
consuming; a big factor considering the recent personnel & hours cuts.
With recent budget cuts, we've invested a fair chunk of time to carefully
remap how we operate in order to keep or exceed current levels of important
patron services  w/ less staff & time. It's a  tough challenge but so far,
we've found some good solutions.
In terms of the vending fax, it offers international calls - something we
could not offer previously- as well as credit card payment. In addition, it
rids us of the associated expenses - such as machine supplies & maintenance,
telephone bill expense, etc. The sweet part is that we still rec. a small
profit - although very small - every penny is useful to a lean budget ;-)
We've also switched to a full vend copier & that saves a bit more on the
bottom line.
We're fortunate to find a reliable company with excellent service record -
that's the only way such a switch will be cost-effective & fair to the
patrons, IMHO.
