Hello Carrie,
It sounds like the skills you are describing below are those found in
many MPA programs. I am wondering if there is a college in your area
that has such a program in an employee-friendly format (such as a local
government cohort) or a certificate program that would help your staff
develop some core skills.
Tim

Subject: [Publib] Reference Department Structure
Hello,
I need some help from the collective mind. Let me give you some
background. I work for a public library system that is relatively new.
In the 34 years of our existence we have moved from one building serving
around 40,000 people to a 6 building system serving 112,000+ (at the
last census estimate.) During that time period we have kept a flat
organizational structure.
We are looking for ways to give our Reference Librarians more skills to
make them promotable to higher level positions (Branch Managers,
Department Heads, etc...) The library system has a very nice training
program for customer service, readers; advisory, reference databases,
and various computer programs. However, we need to give our Reference
Librarians skills in supervising, scheduling, and budgeting.
The Management Team has looked at rotating scheduling of reference
librarians through the department and rotating coordination of
volunteers through the department. But, we are looking for more
suggestions. If your library has anything in place to help with this
issue I would love to hear from you. If you have ideas to help with
this issue I would love to hear from you.
Thank you, in advance, for all your suggestions and help.
