The comments reference the excellent book by Greg Kot:
Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized

The music industry is fascinating. The business has changed
dramatically. It is relatively easy to record, publish, and
distribute without the benefit of a major label. This
democratizes the process and levels the playing field for
talent .
