[Publib] Blu-ray vs. DVD

I would second everything Peter says.  I work in a fairly affluent community and have had only 3 or 4 patron inquiries about Blu-ray this year.  I am certain that if I purchase them, they would get checked out; but there has not been enough expressed interest to warrent spending that much more on a format that may or may not be around in 5 years.  If the patron demand increases and we do start purchasing Blu-ray, we will probably only purchase titles that really benefit from Blu-ray treatment: animated or heavy-CGI/action movies.

Factors behind our decision not to purchase Blu-ray so far:

•          A price difference to up to $10 more per disc for Blu-ray vs. DVD, and therefore,
•          Budgetary considerations: there isn’t enough money to meet demand for both DVD and Blu-ray, because of,
•          Anticipated pressure from patrons to buy both DVD and Blu-ray if we get started on the format, in addition to,
•          Ongoing uncertainty about the long-term viability of any format on 5-inch disc, which is reflected in,
•          Blu-ray’s feeble market penetration so far and lack of acceptance as the undisputed successor to DVD

If the studios force our hand (“get this on Blu-ray or not at all, buddy!”) we’ll go there, but not until then.  Patron inquiries about the format are occasional and not insistent.

Hello.

I thought there had been some discussion on this in the past but could not find anything in
the archives.

So here goes "again?"

We have a fairly decent sized DVD collection that is very popular.  A few patrons have asked
if we are planning on getting any blu-ray material.

I am ready to purchase blu-ray but my library's interim director wants to know what other
libraries are doing with blu-ray.  By that I think she means are there a lot of libraries "out
there" that have made that step?

Please let me know about your deciding factor(s) in purchasing or NOT purchasing.  Have
you had many patrons asking about this format?

Thanks for opinions, policies and viewpoints.

BYE!
