Actually, with ALA you can easily choose whether or not you name and address
is shared with outside organizations. Just go into your profile and change
your communication preferences from "Communications from ALA and outside
organizations" to whatever you want.
Also on the ALA Conference registration form is this section:
Attendees may receive exciting advance information from exhibitors like
invitations, contests and other hot news.
Count me in! Yes No
So, you can check "no" if you don't want information from exhibitors
This does not solve the overall problem mentioned in the original post but
does stop mailings that might come about from ALA membership or conference
registration.
