Phalbe: OK, so why not just do a food drive with the library as the drop-off point?
Patrick: That's an excellent point! We SHOULD do that. I'll bring this up at the next meeting! Thanks! :) I think this is especially good since we are coming up on Thanksgiving.
********************************
Last year ZBPL instituted a policy for drop boxes in our lobby. (We do not have a foyer. Our front doors open directly into our very large lobby, at the other end of which is the circulation desk.) The drop box policy allows community organizations to use the library as a collection point. Thus far we've had a church food pantry for food; the woman's club for scarves/hats/mittens; the Boys & Girls Club for used sporting goods. This month is the second time we've had Reuse-a-Shoe sneakers collection (the shoes go to the solid waste agency who send them to Nike for recycling (http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/). We've also collected small electronic devices (cell phones, etc.) for a recycling project.
At the September board meeting the trustees passed a sales table policy. That will allow community groups to schedule time to have a table in the lobby to sell things for their fundraisers (bake sales, raffle tickets). We have a set of guidelines by which organizations must abide (only one table per week; no group can have a table more than one four-hour period in six months; cannot interfere with patrons, staff, library operations, etc.)
