[Publib] food for fines

Hi
We did this very successfully for a number of years, but contributions
petered our eventually. However while it is doing well it was a real asset
in returned items and for the food pantries.

In the beginning we took overdues waiving their fines and also erased
old fines, but changed to overdues only. We didn't figure out the food
value and the fine. It did mean some people wanted to return stuff with $40
worth of fines with a can of tuna fish, but they were few and far between

Check with your pantries, ours would not take home canned food only
commercially prepared foods. They are also interested in cleaning
supplies. We took those, but boxed them separately.

One year a local grocery store lent us a shopping cart to store things on
the floor as display and collection point.

Food pantries need food all year round and while we started with ours
in December, we moved ours to February for Library Lover's month.
