We have done this now for quite a few years. We started originally
doing it in March, since that is National Nutrition Month. A few years
ago, we added it to November, for an organization in town collecting for
the holidays.
Patrons can bring in one can or box of non perishable food for each $1
up to $5 off of a fine. This does not apply to lost materials, or for
materials that are so far overdue that the patron has been sent to
collection. The boxes and cans of food are checked when handed in for
the expiration dates, and to make sure that they aren't damaged. We
waive the appropriate amount of fine in the patron record, and put a
note to that effect in the record also. Our patrons really like it, and
in mid October we will start promoting the November program. You need
to make sure you have enough boxes for the donated food, (a problem here
- we have 3 floors, so 3 circ desks!) and someone that will pick up
and/or deliver it to the chosen destination. Hope this helps.
