[Publib] The Cashless Library

Los Angeles Public Library used to require a debit card to make copies (this was before they had public-access computers), and charged something like 50 cents for the card. I don't know if it's still their practice, but the last time I printed something from a computer there, I could use coins. I don't know if one can make a photocopy with cash.

Hi Lise,
We are not cahsless. I can tell you when I had to get a card at a neighboring library to get my printouts it was a hassle! First, I had to pay .50 for the privilege of the card. I couldn't just put the amount on there that I needed so now I have a card rolling around with money on it that I probably won't use.
I understand the desire to cut back on handling the cash. As a patron though, I'm not sure I can appreciate it. Especially if I had to put extra money on the card to pay a fine. Or if I wasn't able to use it at all of the libraries that I frequent so I would have to carry a collection of cards and remember which one was for what facility.
I'm not sure it's practical yet, for us at least.

Good Afternoon everyone,
My boss is very interested in having both of our branches become "cashless". He wants all transactions to be with plastic or through funds placed on library cards. Has anyone done this?
Pros & cons would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
