God...how do you people sleep at night?? I would be an anxiety-ridden
mess...worrying that some illness or accident lurked just around the
corner. Do any of you have health care that continues after you retire?
In the US, Medicare (govt health care for older folks) generally starts
at 65. It's rare that someone without independent means or a strong
pension/health program (such as for some public safety employees) can
retire before that time, unless they have a good interim health care
program or a spouse who is still working.
My mom loves Medicare. She says it's the least-complicated, best
coverage health insurance she's ever had.
And it does keep me up at night. Frequently. With my health history, it
will be impossible for me to stop work until I can be covered by public
programs. I have a pension, private retirement funds, but if health
care costs continue as they have been, I won't have coverage except
under an employer (and they're trying to cut back). Social Security for
folks my age won't kick in until age 67 (they moved the goalposts back),
so it's unlikely I can retire before then.
Unless, of course, I manage to marry money. Or a Canadian. I've not
ruled it out ;)
