Dial 911 and wait. Pay close attention so you can give an accurate
description and accounting to the police. Do not put yourself in danger and
do not endanger any other staff member or innocent bystander. Do not EVER
touch a patron.

Everyone,
I'm looking for input on what to do when your patrons get into fights, and
I'm not talking about the hollaring kind. A couple of weeks ago 2 of our
teenaged patrons got into a knock down drag out over in our YA area. I came
off of break, walked to the front, and heard our reference librarian telling
the boys to quit fighting. I looked up and she was trying to separate them,
and no body else was doing anything! Neither patrons nor staff members. I
ran over to help her, pulled one of the kids off of the other and directed
him into a study room. We had to call the police and the ambulance because
one of the kids had bitten the other. They were both suspended from using
the library for 30 days.
The director of this library has since been trying to come up with a policy
on handling these types of situations. We've tossed around ideas such as
calling the police and doing nothing else, to getting a taser (just joking
really). Had these 2 guys been grown men, you better believe I wouldn't
have tried to get involved, but as they were teens, it seemed like a
different situation.
What are your policies on fighting?
thanks in advance!
jessi
