Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome is my best bet. British juv
book. LOVED it. don't remember clubhouse, however (it was a while
ago). It does largely take place on island in a river, however.

Subject: [Publib] RA Stumper - J Fiction
A patron who teaches elementary school would like to locate her favorite
childhood book to share with students. The problem is that she can't
remember the title or the author. As she recalls the plot, a group of
children discover a small island in a river. The overgrown island holds
a wealth of adventures, including a stone house of some sort that they
set up as a clubhouse.
Any takers on this one?
