[Louise Alcorn]

All libraries experience theft.  Rarely at gunpoint, but regularly
through the swiping of materials, or giving false information to obtain
a library card so they can check out and keep materials.  It accounts
for, I suspect, 1000s of dollars of materials lost every year across the
country.  
 
Though I may believe there is a special place in Hell for people who rob
libraries, this viewpoint is clearly not unanimous.  All joking aside, I
think this simply emphasizes the importance for us as library staff to
do everything in our power to raise the profile of the library in the
community.  We should be seen as a vital neighborhood service, not as a
target.  
 
My 2 cents.  And I'd really like to catch the little buggers who stole
all our Orson Scott Card books.
