The Portsmouth (VA) Public Library has two open positions for the following:

Librarian II, Branch Manager for one of four locations in our historic port city. Portsmouth Public Library recently opened a new 20,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility replacing a 5900 square foot, 35 year old location and needs a dynamic team member who can professionally contribute in moving our system forward. Duties involve oversight of daily operations and supervision including: collection development; facility maintenance; scheduling and staffing of full-time and part-time personnel; administrative, budgetary, personnel, circulation and programmatic operations. Also develops and implements programs, especially for children. Requires involvement in system-wide programs, policy updates, training and acquisitions.

Education/Experience:
Master's Degree in Library Science; 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible experience as a managing Librarian; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Special Req: Must be certified as a Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Library Board.

Library Associate - seeking a motivated, self-starter to perform paraprofessional work to assist in the planning, organizing, promoting and directing of various library services available at a branch library. The incumbent will provide reader's advisory services; provide technical and reference assistance to library patrons and primarily assist in the coordination of services provided for children and young adults. Participates in planning and presentation of story-telling and other programs for children. Provides reference assistance for patrons in person, via telephone, facsimile and e-mail; suggests resources in other libraries; provides Reader's Advisory services to patrons concerning choice of books or materials. Reads journals and recommends books for acquisition; purges collection of outdated materials. Night and weekend work will be required.

Education/Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, Education or a related field; 3 to 5 years experience working in a library setting including computer operations or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Salary:
$ 12.43/HR
