We use the genre system; it needs some tweaking, but here are the headings we use:
Rock
Popular (Easy listening/adult contemporary)
Country
Folk
Jazz
World
New Age
Classical (orchestral works)
Opera
Instrumental (soloists and small ensembles)
Choral
Vocal (soloists)
Soundtracks
Broadway
Spiritual
Karaoke
Holiday
Comedy
Miscellaneous (sound effects mainly)
It's not perfect. We need to add an Urban genre, and there are many artists whose work encompasses many different genres, so it can be difficult to determine where they go. But it's much easier for patrons (at least I think so) than ANSCR.

Subject: [Publib] CDs - Cataloging and displaying
I would appreciate knowing how various libraries are cataloging and displaying their CDs. By displaying, I mean how they are organized for the public to find them in open stacks.
Our system uses full ANSCR categories and displays them using all 10,000 of them (ok, its more like 40, but it seems like 10,000). The categories are provided by our supplier and in addition to being much too detailed for our collection, are frequently incorrect. I manage a large branch with about 3000 CD titles. To further confuse the patrons, the items are Cuttered in a most peculiar manner IMHO - Soundtracks by composer instead of movie title, many things by single artist or act are Cuttered under the term collection (example the soundtrack to the Broadway production of Hair is Cuttered under "Collection" rather than "Hair". . .
My former system was a large metropolitan library which had huge collection maintained over a large number of branches. The collection was cataloged over 7 genres and by accession number. The Main Library displayed them in this manner also. The branches usually applied stickers with the first letter for artist name or in the case of movies/shows or true collections (Greatest Hits of 1952, for example) the title.
Any alternative systems or methods would be greatly appreciated.
