Years ago when I was in therapy for depression (mental, not financial,
though the two tend to occur simultaneously) I had this therapist who, after
months of asking me odd questions about myself, finally admitted that she
wanted to go with me on a shape-shifting journey.
I told her that for the money I was paying to listen to myself talk, I
could journey just about anywhere in the continental U.S. And that was the
end of the therapy. I shifted my shape out to my car and never looked back.
One of the nice things about not working as a librarian is that you don't
have to pretend that you approve of your clients' reading selections--or do
anything whatever to satisfy them. You have no idea how much fun it is to
laugh and say, "You actually read that stuff?"
It is Friday. Time to remember the hidden truths of our profession:
there are stupid questions. There are even stupider patrons. By God, there
are absolutely idiotic colleagues and bosses, and if there weren't, you
wouldn't have a job. So thank the Almighty for those poor tastes, badly-formed
opinions, moronic choices and the incessant queries about the men's room,
copy machine and such.
Because if you worked where I do you'd have to re-write an entire union
contract by Monday morning. Much easier to deal with the guy who thinks
Roosevelt was a "hidden Jew" and wants to find information about avoiding cosmic
ray contamination.
And so, off to find the bottom of that Cabernet bottle. I know it's down
there beneath the cork somewhere.
