FYI:
I have updated my FAQ on the $7.2 billion in broadband funding available in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The FAQ is at
http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/pdf/arrabbfaqgen.pdf. While grant guidelines will likely not be released until late June, there are actions libraries can take now. For example, there is considerable speculation that applications showing partnerships or aggregating demand will receive some funding priority. In this regard, library staff need to talk to others (local, county, state government, regional library/education cooperatives, higher education, etc.) to find out if any efforts are underway regarding a possible grant proposal. (See Q9 in the FAQ).
At the annual conference ALA's Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) will have a program titled "Telecommunications: Connecting in the 21st Century" on Sunday, July 12, 10:30am - noon in the Convention Center, rm W176b. An update on the federal broadband funding will be part of this program.
-Bob, Co-chair OITP Telecommunications Subcommittee
