We have two book clubs.  Our newest, an afternoon club, is a free-for-all in which people can talk about any book they like. It's starting to take off, and is drawing people who don't want to be told what to read.   

The evening club is a traditional discussion group with one assigned title.  The success of that one stems from keeping the discussion focused so that people feel they're getting real learning out of it,  but allowing enough socializing time for people to bond.  We also choose discussable books (we vote on titles with some gentle guidance from the librarian.  We have a couple of special months - in April we read poetry; in December we have a feast and play a ruthless round of Booktastic.
