We have two monthly book clubs. The first started back in 1993 (June will be
the 189th meeting) and reads a particular book each month, usually
alternating fiction and non-fiction. It's a group with a wide reading
range. Their first book was "The Bridges of Madison County." In between
that and our current book ("Hard Times" by Studs Terkel) they have read
Kafka, major and minor classics, children's books, Maine authors, and much
more. In July we are going to read Wilder's "Our Town" and go see a local
production of the play. In looking over the attendance records, the numbers
have fluctuated greatly over the years. Sometimes it just depends upon the
book you offer. So, I wouldn't get discouraged by low turnout at first.
Our newest group is "Knit-erature." We're combining knitting (and any other
portable craft) and a love of books. The group has decided not to read a
particular book or author or genre, but instead just knit and talk about
books in general. For our first meeting we had two ladies who hadn't been to
the library in 3 or 4 years and another who had never been here. I think
it's going to be fairly successful. I just need to make sure that I get the
publicity for it out on time. Sigh.
The best thing about books clubs is that it makes me stretch my own range of
reading.
