[Publib] Casual Friday @ your library

We have casual Friday/Saturday the first weekend of every month. You may
wear jeans (without tears, holes or sloppy appearance) IF you also wear
any library identifiable, reading-related or library program-related
t-shirt. During the summer program we have casual program days. Again,
you may wear jeans IF you also wear the summer reading program t-shirt
(first choice) or any library or reading related t-shirt.

Over the years we have offered "for sale to employees" t-shirts and
polo shirts with the Library "L", and our County library name. We got
t-shirts for the library's 100th anniversary. etc. etc. Many of us have
the "So many books, so little time," and the Outside of a book, a dog is
a man's best friend. Inside a book, it's too dark to read."

One of the advantages of these t-shirt days is that the public (who are
new to the library or infrequent visitors) can identify who works here.
Another factor is that jeans are "semi-dressy-wear" for many people
here. Yesterday I went to our congregation women's group's year end
special lunch at a better restaurant and half the women wore their dress
jeans.

Negatives...Get a committee of library staff from all levels to agree
what will be considered approved jeans. If all levels are part of the
decision you will have buy-in. Also by make it clear before the first
jeans day what is not acceptable: like--torn jeans, bleached jeans,
frayed-bottoms, unraveling bottoms or seams. Make it clear what sorts of
tops are acceptable, remembering you have to reach, bend and stoop to
get books.

Then you might make a "Big Deal" about the first JEANS DAY with book
displays of the traveling jeans books, jeans decoration, denim crafts.
and maybe have a jeans-type craft for the kids. Or go for "quite
innovation" and see if anyone notices.

Hi all,

For part of our summer reading program, we are advocating that staff be
allowed to wear jeans on Fridays with programming t-shirts. Do other
libraries out there do anything like this? Staff is excited about the
possibililty, but have any of you experienced any negatives? THanks for
your input!
