How about A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck? The novel is composed of
independent episodes in the lives of Joey and his little sister when they
visit their Granda Dowdel in a small town in Illinois. They take place
between 1929 and 1942, and are all so funny! I especially like the one
about the funeral they put on for "Shotgun" somebody... Seniors would enjoy
them, too--you might talk with them about similar episodes from their own
pasts.
