Our city has a few casual days each year, typically the day before a major
holiday. The parameters of "casual" are left to the department head. Many,
including the library, allow jeans. As part of our United Way drive city
staff can purchase casual Fridays for the 5-6 weeks that the UW drive is
running. Casual days are very popular. It's one perk that I can offer to
staff that doesn't impact the budget. We do have polo shirts with the
library name and city logo that are purchased for staff. Many will wear
these on casual days and these shirts are acceptable on other days too -
though paired with nicer slacks or skirt.
Last year at our staff development day we had a workshop on communication
styles and an exercise that identified what each of our styles was. To
reinforce what we learned from this we have a casual day the last Friday of
each month where staff are expected to wear their ID badges on colored
lanyards that correspond to their communication style. Again, it's a little
perk that doen't lessen the quality of our service at all, that is
appreciated by staff and that impacts morale in a positive way.
Pages have a job that can be down and dirty. Jeans are allowable all the
time for them.
