Although I agree that it is distressing to watch patrons use our most scarce and expensive resource – public access Internet workstations – for what one might feel are frivolous reasons, they are our taxpayers (mostly) and have the right to use whatever amount of computer time you allow an individual to use daily for whatever type of purpose they prefer. Obviously that means that it is legal use as defined by your Internet policy (which you must have and should develop if you don’t). It is analogous to “allowing” patrons to check out Danielle Steele (or worse) instead of Shakespeare, both of which should be in your collection even if one is more “serious” than the other.
I agree it pains me to see someone waiting to use the computer who wants to apply for a job while the person using their minutes is downloading pictures of Brittany Spears or bidding on E-Bay, but that is the reality of public libraries – we serve all without judging what an individual’s tastes and needs are. And actually, they might be looking for work and networking on Facebook and not just gossiping.

I agree with Linda's comments20but it does anger me when I am doing research for ILS 504 or another class and a nearby patron is talking loudly on the internet playing video games. Most of these patrons spend many hours at the library without giving other patrons a chance to use the machines. Our library needs to have a time limit policy to give all folks a chance to use the computers.
