The Los Angeles Times reports that a local fixture for cookbooks, the  Cook's 
Library, will close soon.  Stores like this are good sources for  libraries.  
Librarians can browse and decide, which is important when  picking out 
speciality books like these.  Looks like the big online  retailers claimed another.  
What's left?  Well, there's Janet Jarvits  Cookbooks in Pasadena.  She sells 
used, antique and collectible  cookbooks--not new.  For new you get Amazon and 
can't hold the thing  in your hand.  I'm hoping that Janet's place stays put. 
 And not just  because I babysit her dog Petey.
 
When a small bookstore dies, it takes a big piece of civilization  with it.
