[Publib] Drugs in the Library!

The Los Angeles Central Library had  more thefts last year of personal 
property -- excluding shoplifting -- than any  location in the downtown area.

According to the story, the culprits are drug users.  Gee.  Maybe  we could 
test the patrons?  How's this for a bit of devil's advocacy:   I hope the 
reputation of the place plummets to the point where the city actually  patrols the 
aisles.  A survey of the reading rooms produces a ratio of  about half bums, 
addicts, other assorted squirrels and mental cases (not the  library staff, 
though some seem depressed) with a sprinkling of tourists, and an  occasional 
serious patron.  Of course, all of them are welcome in the Big  Tent that is the 
public library.  Sure.  That's our motto.  You  bet. 
The library suffers when it is made to be a bus station, senior day care  
center, mental health clinic and crash pad.  Why don't librarians tell  their 
zoned-out patrons to go hang out in City Hall?  Because, though  that's also a 
public building, they won't allow denizens of other planets to  wander about 
unsupervised.  The joke's on the library, and everybody who  has to work there.
