I think that the need for Readers Advisory (and Listeners and Viewers
Advisory) is a vital function for any public library, and (IMHO) doesn't
get enough emphasis in library school classes. OR in ongoing training
in most libraries.
Let me brag on my library for a moment! We identified the need for this
kind of expertise and service a few years ago, and developed a series of
Readers Advisory classes presented by our in-house experts. These staff
members are known for their successes in developing their own RA talents
and those of their staff and coworkers. They also have developed
special promotions and displays to highlight our collections.
We now have a series of RA classes offered through our Training Office
throughout the year. They are usually booked solid! In our Staff
Newsletter today, we announce the following classes coming up in the
next few months:
Readers' Advisory 101: Readers' Advisory! What's That?
Readers' Advisory 201: You Don't Have to Read Everything! (getting the
most out of Novelist)
RA by the Numbers: Non-fiction Readers' Advisory
Readers' Advisory for Sci Fi, Fantasy, and Horror: Worlds Unknown:
Revealed!
Readers Advisory for Teen Materials
The classes are fun, and full of readily useful information. I know
that it has increased awareness of the importance of Readers' Advisory
for all levels of staff, and has benefited our patrons.
