Hi-
Well, I am back from an exotic week away, and have finally waded through
my mailbox (including the very spirited discussions here last week.)
One of last week's questions was about the status of a certain branch
library in New York City. While I do not know the answer to that, a
different email noted a study which was done (at the behest of ALA)
about why libraries closed using data from 1999-2003. The report can be
found here:
http://www.webjunction.org/c/document_library/get_file?folderId=11041537
&name=DLFE-2600002.pdf
I have no vested interest in the survey (even if I do know one of the
principal authors) and would note that this survey was done pre-Katrina
(and Rita, and Gustav, and Ike) which so affected my new home state. I
have not worked my way completely through the 35 page report, but I
thought that "all y'all" should know that both ALA cares, and is trying
to get data to help us in the field.
Which brings me to my second point of this missive: my original source
for the study above was a newsletter from IMLS, but the study itself
lives at WebJunction (hosted by OCLC and funded by the Gates
Foundation). There were questions about policies which have been raised
recently, and WebJunction is a great source for policies - and they are
usually real world, actual policies. I know from my Connecticut days,
that my colleagues at the Connecticut State Library have posted the
electronic versions of policies which they had collected, and there are
many, many more.
[And, yes, Webjunction is the host for this list.]
Happy Monday!
