Darren,
We offer video conferencing capabilities at our library. We purchased the
equipment through a grant. We use Life Size equipment, have placed it on a
portable cart with a 50 TV so we can move it around as we have more than
one meeting room. Several libraries in Kansas received the grant and I think
most, if not all, have the Life Size equipment. We do charge for the use of
ours. When the board made that decision it was to assist in paying the
service contract and any other fees associated with it. We are lucky in that
the service contract has been picked up at the state level. I still want to
have some money in reserve in case we need to replace a TV or some other
item not covered in the service contract. We charge $100 per day. Some
object (but they cant travel across the state to a meeting at that price)
so have no problems. We have connected for a number of library related
meetings & programs. For that, its great. Our Life Size will connect with
the PolyCom system.
If you decide to adventure in this area, look at your internet load as it
takes more than you are first told. We had to up our bandwidth so we could
do the videoconferencing and keep our public internet computers going at the
same time.
If you have any specific questions let me know and I can get you in touch
with our tech dept.

Subject: [Publib] Video conferencing capabilities
Hi,
Were looking into offering video conferencing here at our library and are
curious who else offers this resource to their patrons. In todays economy,
I see a lot of potential of offering this technology to businesses, staff
training, general patrons, City departments, etc. If you do have video
conferencing capabilities, do you use a PolyCom system?
Thanks for your time,
Darren
