We have a catered volunteer appreciation breakfast each year (the Friends pay) and give a small gift. Also we stockpile new books for a bit (those without holds) and all volunteers select one to have a tribute nameplate placed in it (saying "In honor of valued volunteer Jane Smith"). This custom (brought here from my former library) is THE most popular thing and costs us virtually nothing.

Also this year we did gaming with our Wiis - had teen volunteers teaching seniors how to bowl, bat, etc. Fun stuff.

We throw a catered luncheon once a year complete with small gifts (this last year we gave away re-usable shopping bags along with some other small items), speeches and sometimes plaques.
It is well-attended and appreciated.

I am looking for some ideas for library volunteer recognition. Does 
anyone have a system in place for rewarding/recognizing volunteers for 
their service (number of hours volunteered, projects completed, etc.)?

Any ideas for token gifts to hand out as rewards or any experience with 
recognizing outstanding volunteers on the website or bulletin board?
