Besides the allergy issue (my husband is so allergic he has to go on
steroids if he even goes anywhere near a cat or a place that has had one) Who
will pay for vet bills? Who will pay to spay or neuter? Litter box or
outside cat? If litter box who will clean it and where will it be? If outside,
who will wait after closing to make sure it returns and is safe?
Does your insurance cover the library if the cat scratches or bites
someone, especially small children who may not have pets and know how to treat
them?
There is a lot to think about besides how cute it would be to have a
library cat. As you can tell I have had to think about this a lot! Once Dewey
was published I had a lot of people want to give us a cat and I had to
explain why not all cat stories turn out as well as Dewey!

Our library is interested in possibly adopting a newly-weaned kitten as a
library
cat. Has anyone else ever hosted a library cat? How did it work out? Did
the patrons
enjoy the cat, did the staff enjoy the cat? Any feedback you could provide
would be
greatly appreciated. We realize that not every experience may have been as
positive
as "Dewey Readmore Books" in Iowa and we wish to start off on the right
"paw".
Please respond off-list at my email address as given below. Thank you.
