Columns and blogs (was: [Publib] CREW method)

Our library system provides several columns on a regular basis to local publications. We have a weekly column in the paper's Saturday supplement, we do a monthly book review for a magazine targeted to older adults, and the librarians at one of our community branches does a mix of reviews, reading lists, and programming announcements for that community's small local paper.

We've also started a book blog, whose address is below my sig line. Still experimenting, still encouraging all staff to contribute to it. We have high hopes. :-)

I used to write a column about upcoming programs for our library, but then the editor just stopped publishing it. And now the paper's folded (no pun intended ...), so that's that.

We had someone writing up about new books, too. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if she's still doing that for another paper ... I should look into it.

I do maintain a blog for the library system, and that may draw in some people. I honestly don't know, as we don't have a method of tracking that. It's at: http://blogs.nsls.info/thebook/ if anyone wants to see it.

By the way, it used to be fairly common for librarians to write regular columns in small local newspapers. This has gone the way of homemade mayonnaise, and it is just too bad. For one thing, the mayonnaise trick was something you could give to a bored child to do. For another, the library column kept the library in the eye of the public, and it was a great public relations tool.

Of course, many small papers have folded. But more than that, the librarians don't write anymore. Which, given the overall decline in writing skill in the society, may be a good thing. Somebody out there prove me wrong by starting a library column in your local sheet. Go ahead, write away.

By the way, if you can remember when they sold mayonnaise mills at the store, you are old. Why would you make your own? Because it's easy, and because you don't have a refrigerator.
