By the way, it used to be fairly common for librarians to write regular  
columns in small local newspapers.  This has gone the way of homemade  
mayonnaise, and it is just too bad.  For one thing, the mayonnaise trick  was 
something you could give to a bored child to do.  For another, the  library 
column kept the library in the eye of the public, and it was a great  public 
relations tool.
 
Of course, many small papers have folded.  But more than that, the  
librarians don't write anymore.  Which, given the overall decline in  writing skill 
in the society, may be a good thing.  Somebody out there  prove me wrong by 
starting a library column in your local sheet.  Go ahead,  write away.
 
By the way, if you can remember when they sold mayonnaise mills at the  
store, you are old.  Why would you make your own?  Because it's easy,  and 
because you don't have a refrigerator.
