[Publib] ? Saturdays before or after a holiday in small, rural,
poor counties

We are not a small, rural, poor county; we are a small, urban/suburban county with a population ranging from poor to quite well-to-do. (We have a central library and 9 branches.) However, we have always been open the Saturday before/after a holiday, and the central library has always been open the Sunday before/after as well. We have found that the Sundays in particular are often extremely busy as patrons finish up projects and/or stock up on materials before the holiday.
On the other hand, my first public library job was in a small, semi-rural Ohio library with only two full-time staff, the director and myself, who alternated working Fridays and Saturdays. We closed two days several times because of staffing issues--if the holiday was Friday and he was scheduled to work and off because we were closed, but I was working Saturday and we were open, I then needed a "comp day" sometime that week to make up for it, and it was easier to just close two days.

Subject: [Publib] ? Saturdays before or after a holiday in small, rural, poor counties
Good morning, all. (And greetings to those for whom it's not morning.)
Our county manager is suddenly questioning why we're closed on Saturdays after a Friday holiday or before a Monday holiday. We're a small, rural, poor county, with a small percentage of high school students continuing on to higher education. I'm new here, but it's been my experience in other places that those Saturdays would not have enough door count to justify being open.
I'd like to hear from other like libraries if you *are* open on those Saturdays.
Thanks.
