We used headsets with our cordless phones for a while (all our service
desks have multiple cordless handsets for their phone lines), but found
them more bother than help. Patrons did not recognize that we were
engaged when we were talking on the headset. They would come up and try
to engage us, while we talked blankly into the middle distance.
Especially true of patrons over 50 and I can see why.

That is not a problem when we are using our cordless handsets. Then
patrons see the handset, know we are engaged and wait for their turn.
Still able to transfer, intercom, etc. using a standard office system.

I do miss the advantages of being hands free, since I am a poor enough
typist with two hands, but it caused too many problems. I still use the
headset occasionally when doing computer troubleshooting. It is nice to
have both hands free then.
