We've used Unique Management as our collection agency for several years
and have gotten back, in returned materials and fines, monetary value
close to the amount of a year's book budget. Reasonable people, like
the husband with the $4 fine, understand that libraries are just being
good stewards of public funds when this is explained to them.
UNreasonable people, who get upset with the library for sending them to
collection for owing up to hundreds of dollars, will rant and rave and
call you names. Not only do I not "feel their pain," I am downright
delighted if they threaten never to darken our door again. They've
already proven themselves unable to understand that libraries LEND books
and that they must be returned in good condition and on time.
