Golden Book Encyclopedias were my entry drug as well. Dallas, TX,
1950s-1960s, Safeway.
I guess we was all pretty poor. Safeway books, gas station cutlery and
glassware; I got a set of encyclopedias from Safeway, one a week. We saved
up blue and green stamps for furniture. Ever wonder why the library was so
popular among our kind in our time? It was the only free thing out there.
We were what I used to call the "respectable poor."
What drug was better for delivery from bad circumstances than a book?
