Most of John Irving would work, especially A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY, CIDER
HOUSE RULES, and THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (with a warning not to watch
the movies instead or they will be seriously led astray.) Tim O'Brien's
GOING AFTER CACCIATO or THE THINGS THEY CARRIED may work, as would THE NIGHT
GARDENER by George Pelecanos, MYSTIC RIVER by Dennis Lehane and TO THE POWER
OF THREE by Laura Lippman. I would also recommend EMPIRE FALLS by Richard
Russo, THE CHEESE MONKEYS by Chip Kidd and most of Pat Conroy, especially
THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE and THE GREAT SANTINI. Jodi Picoult often touches on
this type of theme in her books as well.

Finally, you may want to post this request on the FictionL listserv, it's
what they do best. Hope this helps.

Subject: [Publib] R.A. help

Hello,
The Honors American Literature class gives a very specific summer reading
assignment in our town. Students need to read a contemporary novel (1980 or
after) written by an American author, and it must have the theme of
individual vs.society. They must be able to write an essay on how the
character seeks redemption.

Any suggestions? We had our first student with this assignment today, and we
want to be ready with a long list when the swarms start coming.

Thanks so much!
Katie
