Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for advice on "adopting
shelves". I didn't hear that anyone is doing this type of program, but I
did learn that orchestras have endowed chairs, zoos have sponsored
visits, highways get adopted, and many libraries have nameplated
furniture.
Surprisingly, those who responded were unanimously in favor of temporary
recognition. Several people mentioned that they have buildings
overflowing with plaques, pictures, and artwork honoring donors from
long ago.
We were originally going to buy engraved nameplates and require a large
donation. However, we've decided to solicit smaller donations and to
create our own nameplates using a nice paper and clear shelf labels.
Donations will be solicited in August and February in conjunction with
two big events; those are the only times that the nameplates will be
mounted. We are trying to make the program as simple, effective and
non-bureaucratic as possible.
Wish us luck! If anyone else decides to start a program like this, drop
me a line!
Thanks for your help!

Subject: [Publib] shelving fundraiser
Hello! My new library foundation would like to raise funds by offering
folks the opportunity to adopt a shelf in the library. The way that they
envision it, one would pay a monthly or annual fee and be recognized
with a nameplate placed on the shelf of one's choice. Nameplates would
be removed once one stops contributing.
Does anyone know of a similar program, even outside of libraries? The
idea that you are recognized only while you are actively giving is the
strange twist to me. Also, if you have any advice regarding nameplating
library furniture and shelves, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!
