Our library system does not have an official policy that I know of, so I can
only speak as to the practice. MMPBs purchased by our Collections folks are
definitely cataloged, labeled, given the same treatment as any other book.
MMPBs in pristine condition that are donated to branch libraries can be
added by librarians as copies to existing cataloging records. If there is no
catalog record for a book, it can either be sent to Cataloging for
consideration, or it can be added to the system as an "Uncataloged
Paperback." The latter practice is discouraged, since it means the book
can't be discovered by anyone using the catalog.
The bigger issue we have with MMPBs is shelving them... At the moment, my
branch has MMPBs in the following separate locations: Adult Romance, Adult
Mystery, Adult Classics, African-American Classics, African-American
Urban/Street Lit, YA series, YA non-series, JUV series, JUV non-series. In
other words, way too many places to look for stuff -- something we're in the
midst of addressing.
