[Publib] Cataloging and circulating paperbacks

Another reason to catalog paperbacks, rather than giving them a generic barcode, is to identify the work to the borrower.  An overdue notice (or circulation receipt) showing only "paperback" is of no help in trying to determine exactly what was checked out.
