Speaking as a researcher (meaning, not a librarian here) I have a question
for the library world. But first, some preliminaries.
I've only been reading library journals since about 1970. Prior to that I
had no contact with the currents of the profession. I missed a lot of what
Dewey wrote first time around, but I looked it up later.
Some nice reader of publib sent me a note: "What exactly is Library 2.0?
It seems like a bag of air to me."
And so, as a researcher, I ask the same question of this audience. Because,
as a researcher, which is to say, a reader, gatherer of information and a
writer of papers based on findings, I find (so to speak) that there isn't
anything at all to write about regarding Library 2.0. I am disappointed in
myself. Rarely do I fail to discover content in my searches. This time I seem to
have whiffed.
Whiffed completely. As in, stuck out--worse than that, even. Because I
didn't even see a ball. Though I've seen quite a few pitchers.
I was wondering is anybody out there could direct me to a product, outcome,
fixed or changed process of any significance which is connected in any
original way to this 2.0 thing? Because I have to let my friend know what I've
found, and right now, I've got nothing. If you'd like to help, please answer
these questions:
1. Before Library 2.0, the situation was XXXX. Now, post-2.0, the
situation (here) is measurably different in that (fill in blank).
2. Library 2.0 represents a significant or complete departure from previous
operations in that it (explain here).
3. The essential, tangible components of 2.0 (as opposed to nonspecific
references to philosophies, attitudes or the like) are: XXXX.
4. My answer to anyone who would suggest that Library 2.0 is merely a
collection of slogans and tech-speak from coffee house idlers would be: XXXX.
5. I could easily ask for an increase in my library's funding based on
Library 2.0. I would simply tell the City Council (expound here).
Of course, you are free to supply your own information and arguments.

Naptime 2.0.
