McMillan Memorial Library has created a guide to Wood County cemeteries,
using a Google Maps mashup to make it easier to find each of the over sixty
cemeteries. Even though many genealogical records have moved to the
Internet, most genealogists consider a visit to ancestral cemeteries a must.
The Library's guide is located at
http://www.mcmillanlibrary.org/history/cemeteries.html. The guide includes
a listing of each cemetery, a brief description of the location and the GPS
coordinates. These coordinates can be used with car navigation systems to
obtain turn by turn directions.
The guide also includes a Google Map that pinpoints the location of each
cemetery. This map has zoom capabilities and can be displayed with roads or
as a satellite view. Directions to each site are provided by Google,
including turn by turn directions from anywhere in the United States.
McMillan houses an index to pre-1980 burials in all Wood County cemeteries,
which includes the inscriptions on the monuments. While the Library does
not have permission to move this index to the Internet, they provide free
lookups. Contact the library at 422-5136, via email at
askmcm at scls.lib.wi.us or online at
http://www.mcmillanlibrary.org/library/askmcm.html.
