So, when you're building a skyscraper or sports arena, the plumber isn't
vital? In a different way than librarians are vital?
A big part of my job is about buildings: new and renovated. Without
plumbers, electricians, and other building trades, there's no building.
Of course they are. What I'm saying is, our plumbers aren't drain cleaners.
Nor are the electricians working on high rise buildings merely connecting
light switches.
The problem here is that the public doesn't know what a plumber or
electrician is. The guy at your house isn't really a plumber or electrician--does
that take you by surprise? They have that name because they perform some aspect
of the work. You understand that the public likewise thinks librarians are
people who stamp dates in books? Same thing. In the same way, they ask our
plumbers, who go to school for at least five years, whether they had to go to
school for that. Sound familiar?
I remember a construction electrician who went to library school with me
once saying, "This curriculum is rather lacking in challenge, don't you think?"
I just laughed.
The difference between "Joe the Plumber" and an actual plumber is as the
difference between a library page and a librarian.
