[Publib] Downgrading the profession

Tell me please - can one become a Medical Doctor on line? an Architect? an
Engineer? an Attorney? I suppose there are some schools that offer such degrees
and certification. Those professions require some kind of practicum, an
internship, a product demonstrating skill - something that demonstrates a
knowledge or skill. In my opinion part of the death knell sounded for Librarianship
comes from the notion that anyone can sit down at a computer and become
knowledgeable and demonstrate that knowledge and go to work as a Librarian.

How can managers expect to get a reference for a candidate when the person
or school fulfilling that request has never laid eyes on the candidate; has
never heard him/her speaks; cannot verify that the individual uses good grammar
and cannot even testify that the work done on the computer was actually the
product of the individual in question.

If Librarianship as a profession is dead it may very well be that one of the
greatest tools for information sharing and retrieval caused the final blow!
Now it is up to us to insist that some changes are made so credibility can
be restored.
