LC classification started with this letter from T Jefferson discussing his
plans to arrange the collection purchased from him by Congress after the
Capitol was burnt:

I have always been partial to LC since managing the bookstacks at Brown. 52
miles of
shelves in two buildings, mostly LC with a splash of SUDOCs and a
sprinkle of classic Cutter.
I must have walked a thousand miles of books and peeked inside whatever
struck my fancy.
